AT SCHOOL AND EARLY JOB


At Birkenhead School






After private tuition at Hooton Grange by a Charlotte Wulff , who later became one of the Hope-Jones Company Shareholders, Robert went to Birkenhead school. His brothers also went to the school their names being recorded in the register of old boys.

As an Apprentice at Lairds Shipbuilders.


















After school Robert played the organ at St Lukes Church Tranmere. A sidesman at the church was William Laird the owner of Lairds Shipyard. Interestingly, Robert then became an apprentice at Lairds Shipyard and during this apprenticeship for a time operated the Companies telephone system. After finishing his apprenticeship Robert joined the Lancashire and Cheshire Telephone Company and eventually became the Chief Electrician.
